Maybe it’s a bit early without a clear salary cap but let’s go! Here are my suggestions for player options.
A low cap would only strengthen the argument for the “opts in” guys so I guess it’s more the gamblers group (Middleton, Gallo, Drummond, Adams) that comes with a grain of salt.
Opts in
Otto Porter 28M – He would not get that kind of money this year, plus there’s a decent chance he can regain value next season
Patrick Patterson 9,7M – I mean… A fringe rotation player making almost 10M – no brainer
John Wall 33,6M – Commish has proved last year with Cousins that testing the market can pay off in this kind of situation. I still think you play it safe here and use this season to try to regain value
Dion Waiters 14M – Must feel good to sit on a bench with a 14M cushion
McGruder 1,9M – He barely plays and plays poorly when he does, plus coach has changed IRL. He looks like someone who could stay on the FA list all season if he opts out.
Nerlens Noel 24M – No brainer to me, he should enjoy this deal until the very last drop
Cody Zeller 15,5M – You could absolutely go both ways but his market might not be great so I’d remain on the safe side.
Lou Williams 23M – Seems overpaid to me and should still have a market next year so let’s cash in big money for one last season
Cory Joseph 5,7M – Could go both ways though I think this money is more his ceiling than his floor so I’d play it safe
Exum 8,5M – Not convinced he’d get anything of real value on the market so it’s close to a no-brainer
Kyle Guy 1,5M – Might not even have a contract otherwise
Harkless 13M – Seems extremely generous to me so I would absolutely cash in
Ibaka 34,5M – If he splashes in free agency to see if he can find one last long juicy contract, I would find it audacious but not crazy. However, there’s a real risk 34M would become his salary over two years instead of one so I’d prefer to play this contract out
Gasol 12,1M – He should wait as long as possible - to see what happens IRL - but at this stage it seems he might even be out of the completely, so…
Opts out if salary cap is decent
Lillard 28M – He needs the max and he needs it now
Middleton 24M – Time to see if someone throws the max
Gallo 20M – There’s a case to be made the other way. However, he has been decently healthy the last two seasons – which has not always been the case - and should try to get long-term security while he can in my opinion.
Drummond 28M – There are strong arguments for him to opt in but it’s a tough one. I see it as potentially the last window to get a huge deal.
Steven Adams 20M – Pretty much the same here. I wouldn’t have anything to say if he opted in but I think there’s a decent risk his role diminishes in the near future. So I’d go the “let’s try to cash in as long as we can” way
Opts out anyway
Danuel House 2,6M – A way better payday is coming I guess
Ellington 2,6M – He should get a contract anyway so why not try to go for more than the minimum
Temple 2,6M – Same as Ellington
Guillermo Hernangomez – Same as above
Kaminksy 1,9 – Had a decent season, can go for more and a longer contract
Lyles 1,9 – Same as Kaminsky
Norman Powell 9,7 – He had an awesome season so timing is excellent for him to opt out. He should absolutely go for it.
