Breaking news!
Reports are coming out that the Office has found a new GM for the Atlanta Hawks!
The has been searching over the summer for someone to run the franchise. Unfortunately, the prolonged search has run through the summer and the new GM has missed out on the opportunity to make quite a lot of moves. The Draft led to the selections of Cameron Johnson, Tyler Herro, and Cody Martin.
Over the free agent frenzy, only made one move but it was a major one - signing superstar Nikola Jokic to the supermax rookie extension. Though obviously an easy choice, it was one that at least ensures one star for the long term in Hotlanta!
Rumors are swirling over which moves the new management will make but it appears as though the GM is looking to shuffle the deck. If they choose to stand pat with their current roster, the team has a shot at playoff relevance with a core team of Nikola Jokic and Rudy Gobert serving as twin towers and DeMar DeRozan completing the front court trio. However, the reports suggest that outside of Jokic, no one is untouchable.
Now, just because Gobert may be available doesn't mean he'll come cheap. The man was one of the best centers in the last year. It'll likely take a significant haul of some combination of contributors on good deals, young blue chip rookies, and/or draft picks for them to make that move. DeRozan is reportedly available for less as his contract expires this year but he would make a great asset for a win now team.
Regardless of what they decide to do now, it's good to see the Hawks back in the hands of a GM who can try to actively position the team for success. Whether that success is in the short or the long run remains to be seen but the GM has time to consider his options leading all the way into the trade deadline. It should be an exciting time ahead for !
